Bodyguard remake: what Warner isn’t saying yet…

The return of a cult film is already making Hollywood tremble. In 2025, Warner Bros is bringing back Bodyguard, the romantic masterpiece of the 90s, with a new artistic team… but no confirmed leads yet. And that’s where the suspense begins.

Sam Wrench, an unexpected choice for a risky remake

Directed by Sam Wrench, best known for his documentaries on pop stars such as Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter, this is his first major feature film. An intriguing choice: will the director’s musical sensibility be enough to revisit a film whose DNA rests as much on music as on romance? Jonathan Abrams is also new to the script. He worked on Juror n°2, directed by Clint Eastwood, but this project is in a completely different register.

An overwhelming musical legacy

Released in 1992, the original Bodyguard conquered the world, grossing over $411 million at the box office and boasting a cult soundtrack featuring Whitney Houston ‘s legendary rendition of I Will Always Love You. Taking up the torch is as ambitious as it is perilous.

Who will play Rachel Marron and Frank Farmer?

Casting remains undisclosed, but several names are already circulating. To succeed Whitney Houston, Cynthia Erivo and Halle Bailey seem to be credible options, both for their vocal talent and dramatic intensity. Zendaya and Simone Ashley are also being considered, based on their fame and screen presence.

On the men’s side, Kevin Costner could be replaced by Bradley Cooper, Idris Elba or Theo James. Three very different profiles, but each capable of portraying a Frank Farmer who is at once protective, mysterious and unsettling.

A profitable nostalgia or a betrayal foretold?

Warner is playing with fire: how do you modernize such an iconic film without distorting it? Between issues of representation, musical homage and intergenerational expectations, the Bodyguard remake will be closely scrutinized. Casting, tone, soundtrack: everything must be beyond reproach.
