Christian Lacroix and the stage: a creative passion

Renowned couturier Christian Lacroix has always been fascinated by the world of the stage. Since 1985, he has been designing costumes for theater, opera and dance. His talent also extends to stage direction and set design.

An exhibition dedicated to his stage work


From April 5, 2025 to January 4, 2026, the Centre National du Costume et de la Scène (CNCS) in Moulins presents the exhibition“Christian Lacroix et la scène”. This retrospective celebrates a 40-year career in the performing arts. Over 120 costumes from various productions are on display, accompanied by numerous iconographic documents.

Prestigious collaborations

Christian Lacroix has collaborated with numerous cultural institutions. He has designed costumes for the Comédie-Française, the Paris Opera Ballet and various opera houses. In 2011, he created the costumes for the ballet “La Source” for the Opéra national de Paris, in collaboration with choreographer Jean-Guillaume Bart. These costumes, embroidered with Swarovski crystals, reflect his dreamlike universe and attention to detail.

A multidisciplinary approach

In addition to costume design, Lacroix is also involved in stage direction and set design. In December 2024, he collaborated with Éric Ruf on the staging and set design of Paul Claudel’s “Le Soulier de satin” at the Comédie-Française. This production testifies to his versatility and commitment to the performing arts.

A tribute to craftsmanship

The exhibition at the CNCS highlights the work of the specialized couture workshops with which Lacroix collaborates. The costumes on display illustrate the craftsmen’s exceptional know-how and attention to detail. This retrospective offers an immersion into the creative world of Christian Lacroix, and highlights his major impact on the world of live performance.

Celebrating four decades of artistic contributions, “Christian Lacroix and the Stage” pays tribute to a creator whose work continues to enrich and inspire theater, opera and dance.
