Kate Winslet goes behind the camera with Netflix

Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet is set to direct her first film, Goodbye June, a family drama produced by Netflix.

It’s a big first for Kate Winslet! After a brilliant career in front of the camera, the British actress is about to move behind it as a director. Her first project, Goodbye June, will be produced by Netflix and feature a prestigious cast including Helen Mirren, Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn and Timothy Spall.

The film will tell the story of a group of siblings reunited in difficult circumstances, in a tale that is both touching and humorous, according to Netflix. The screenplay is by Kate Winslet’s 21-year-old youngest son, Joe Anders, adding a family dimension to this directorial debut.

A late vocation, but one I’ve accepted

Kate Winslet may be making her directorial debut, but her desire to direct is nothing new. As a guest on the How to Fail podcast last September, she confided that several colleagues had suggested that she move into directing, but that she was still hesitating.

She explained that she felt an urgency to grab the camera, not least to inspire other women in the film industry. She declared, “The more of us that do it, the more we’ll inspire others.” However, she insisted on the importance of doing things right: “I’ll never do anything if I don’t really know how to do it right.”

Shooting imminent in the UK

Kate Winslet is not only directing Goodbye June, she will also be co-producing, alongside Kate Solomon, with whom she previously collaborated on Lee, a biopic about war photographer Lee Miller.

The film is due to start shooting soon in the UK, marking a new stage in the actress’s career. It remains to be seen whether this first attempt behind the camera will be as memorable as her on-screen performances.
