The Village People to sing at Donald Trump’s inauguration

Legendary 1970s disco band the Village People, famous for their global hit “Y.M.C.A.”, will perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration festivities. A decision presented as a unifying gesture, but one that divides opinion.

Victor Willis, the band’s frontman, announced the news on his Facebook page, justifying the choice with a desire to transcend political divides: “We know this will make people unhappy, but we believe that music should live without political considerations.” He also expressed his hope that their song “Y.M.C.A.”, a true global anthem, would bring the country together after an election campaign marked by deep divisions.

A reappropriated cultural symbol

Released in 1978, the song “Y.M.C.A.”, known for its iconic video and choreography, has long been a standard-bearer for the LGBTQ+ community. Yet it has become a staple of Donald Trump’s rallies, and he doesn’t hesitate to perform it with a few dance steps, imitated by sportsmen and fans. Although the rights holders threatened legal action for unauthorized use in 2020, Victor Willis seems to have validated its use this time, even welcoming the rise in sales of the track after Trump’s victory.

Strong artistic choices

The event will also be marked by the presence of country singer Carrie Underwood, who will perform the patriotic song “America The Beautiful”. This artistic choice contrasts with the attitude of many stars who, during the presidential campaign, overwhelmingly supported Kamala Harris. Figures such as Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Bruce Springsteen had publicly criticized Donald Trump.

Despite Trump’s accusations regarding individual freedoms and minority rights, the Village People hope their performance will bring a note of hope and togetherness, in a particularly tense political and social climate.
