Rumor has it: Cillian Murphy could play Lord Voldemort in the upcoming Harry Potter series produced by HBO. Ralph Fiennes, the role’s emblematic interpreter in the films, supports the idea.

Since the announcement of a serial adaptation of the Harry Potter saga, produced by HBO Max, speculation has been rife. Among them, the possibility of Cillian Murphy taking on the role of the Dark Lord, Voldemort. Although unconfirmed, this idea has received strong support from Ralph Fiennes, who played the character in five of the original films.

Speaking on Watch What Happens Live on December 3, Ralph Fiennes called Cillian Murphy a “fantastic actor” and applauded the possibility, calling it “brilliant”. Should this rumor materialize, the Irish actor, known for his roles in Peaky Blinders and Oppenheimer, would bring his own intensity to this iconic character.

A series in full development

HBO Max has revealed a few details about this eagerly-awaited adaptation. Director Mark Mylod(Succession, Game of Thrones) and screenwriter Francesca Gardiner(His Dark Materials) are working on the project, while saga creator J.K. Rowling is executive producer. However, the controversy surrounding the author’s statements could affect the project’s reception.

On the casting front, auditions are open for the new Harry, Ron and Hermione, and names like Mark Rylance are circulating to take over the role of Dumbledore. But for Voldemort, the choice of Cillian Murphy, while speculative, could offer a new dimension to the character.
