Exhibition Paris, Capitale de la Perle
The École des Arts Joailliers reveals the fascinating history of pearls and their influence on Parisian art.
The “Paris, Capitale de la Perle” exhibition, organized by L’École des Arts Joaillierswill run from November 21, 2024 to March 23, 2025. This event explores the central role of pearls in culture and trade between France and the Arabian Gulf.
The history of pearls in Paris
Between 1860 and 1930, pearls from the Gulf flooded the Paris market. Paris thus became the world capital of fine pearls. The great jewellers of Place Vendôme, such as Van Cleef & Arpels, transformed these pearls into luxurious jewels.
An exhibition rich in treasures
The exhibition features over one hundred pieces from prestigious collections, including those of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Petit Palais. Historical archives, period documents and jewelry illustrate the story of this commercial saga. Visitors will discover the sea and land routes that linked the “Pearl Coast” to Paris.
A passion shared by artists
Beyond jewelry, Parisian artists were also inspired by pearls. The Roaring Twenties saw the birth of a veritable “pearlomania”. Cinema, opera, painting and posters all contributed to making the pearl a symbol of modernity.
A journey in six sections
The exhibition is divided into six sections, tracing the history of pearls, their secrets and their influence on Parisian art. In particular, visitors will explore the arrival of cultured pearls in the 1920s.
A sensory experience
The exhibition’s scenography will awaken visitors’ senses, in particular sight and touch. An interactive visioguide offers additional illustrations and documents to prolong this immersion in the world of pearls.
