Cédric Klapisch at Cannes: a date finally sealed

It’s a moment that many have been waiting for, without really believing it. For the first time in his career, Cédric Klapisch has officially invited himself to the Cannes Film Festival. His fifteenth feature, La Venue de l’avenir, will be presented Out of Competition at the 2025 edition. A symbolic recognition for a director who is often acclaimed by the public, but who has long stayed away from the Croisette.

A family fable at the crossroads of time

With La Venue de l’avenir, Klapisch returns to his fundamentals: a human chronicle woven from family ties, shared silences and intimate metamorphoses. The story begins in Normandy, around a house inherited by cousins. But very quickly, the place becomes more than a setting: it becomes a crossroads where past and present intertwine. Mirroring these contemporary trajectories, another woman, living in Paris… in 1895, disturbs the linearity of time.

This narrative process, both modest and ambitious, confirms the filmmaker’s ability to create a dialogue between generations, while exploring the invisible strata of memory. It’s also a conscious aesthetic choice, in collaboration with screenwriter Santiago Amigorena, a faithful accomplice since Deux Moi.

A cast that captures the zeitgeist

The strength of Klapisch’s cinema often lies in his casting. And here again, he is no exception to the rule. La Venue de l’avenir (The Coming of the Future) showcases the rising talent of French cinema: Suzanne Lindon, already acclaimed for her accuracy in Seize Printemps, Paul Kircher, the revelation of Le Règne animal, and Vassili Schneider, with his magnetic gaze and potential for greatness. Alongside them, Vincent Macaigne and Cécile de France bring a more mature density to this intergenerational score.

Cannes 2025: a discreet but symbolic turning point

Klapisch at Cannes is like a return to the center of the game for a filmmaker who has often preferred the byways. Without competition but not without ambition, this film could well mark a turning point in his filmography. And perhaps pave the way for critical recognition commensurate with its cultural impact.
