Greta Gerwig tackles Narnia: reboot scheduled for 2026?

What if the magic of Narnia was given a new lease of life by Greta Gerwig? Having made box-office history with Barbie, the American filmmaker is now tackling a completely different universe: that of C.S. Lewis. Her aim? To re-enchant The World of Narnia for a post-fantasy generation.

An ambitious rebirth supported by Netflix

More than ten years after The Odyssey of the Dawn Treader (2010), the Narnia saga is set to return to screens. Netflix, which has held the rights since 2018, has commissioned Greta Gerwig to direct two feature films, in collaboration with screenwriter Matthew Aldrich(Coco). Estimated budget: $200 million. That’s all there is to it.

Filming is scheduled for 2025, with a simultaneous worldwide release on Netflix and in cinemas as early as December 2026.

Saoirse Ronan, Charli XCX and… Meryl Streep?

On the casting front, fans are already abuzz with rumours. Gerwig’s muse Saoirse Ronan is rumored to have a central role. Meryl Streep would play Aslan, the emblematic lion, while Daniel Craig could lend his features to Uncle Andrew.

As for the role of the dreaded White Witch, three names are circulating: Margaret Qualley, Emma Mackey and Charli XCX. The Brat Summer singer would bring an unexpected modernity to this cult character.

Greta Gerwig, from Barbie pink to Narnia’s eternal snow

Known for her sharp eye for the female condition(Lady Bird, The Daughters of Doctor March, Barbie), Gerwig promises a version of Narnia as cinematic as it is symbolic. The challenge is enormous: to reconcile yesterday’s imagination with tomorrow’s issues, in a world where fantasy must speak to reality.
