Greta Gerwig reinvents The World of Narnia for Netflix
After the Barbie phenomenon, Greta Gerwig is tackling a monument of fantasy literature. In 2026, the director will unveil two new World of Narnia films, produced by Netflix and scheduled for simultaneous release on the platform and in cinemas. An ambitious adaptation that promises to breathe new life into Aslan, the Pevensies and C. S. Lewis’s enchanted lands.
A long-awaited comeback after more than a decade
Narnia last appeared on the big screen in 2010, with The Odyssey of the Dawn Treader. After the Silver Chair project was abandoned, Netflix bought back the rights in 2018, preparing a full reboot. The firm has entrusted the task to Greta Gerwig, who will benefit from a colossal $200 million budget for her adaptations.
Co-written with Coco (2017) screenwriter Matthew Aldrich, this project promises to be a bold, visually spectacular reinterpretation. Shooting is scheduled for 2025.
A mysterious but promising cast
While no names have been officially confirmed, several rumors are already circulating. Saoirse Ronan, Gerwig’s muse(Lady Bird, The Outrun), could play a central role. Charli XCX, pop icon and creator of Brat Summer, is said to be in talks to play the White Witch, succeeding Tilda Swinton. Mikey Madison(Anora), a recent Oscar winner, is also being considered. However, Louis Partridge(Enola Holmes) is no longer involved in the project.
Greta Gerwig, the billion-dollar director
With Barbie, Greta Gerwig became the first director to break the billion-dollar box-office barrier. Her influence is undeniable, and Netflix is banking on her narrative and visual talent to resurrect Narnia and appeal to a new generation of viewers.
The anticipation is immense: will Gerwig turn Narnia into a new pop phenomenon? Answer in 2026.
