A$AP Rocky and Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s next film

Director Spike Lee is preparing an ambitious remake of the Japanese thriller Between Heaven and Hell, starring Denzel Washington, A$AP Rocky and Ice Spice.

Spike Lee calls on American rapper A$AP Rocky to join the cast of his new film, Highest 2 Lowest. Scheduled for theatrical release in 2025, the film is a contemporary adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s cult Japanese thriller High and Low (1963).

A psychological thriller revisited

In this modern version, iconic actor Denzel Washington takes on the central role of Kingo Gondo, a wealthy industrialist on the verge of acquiring a majority stake in a major shoe company. His world is turned upside down when he receives an anonymous call demanding ransom for the release of his son. But the plot thickens when he learns that it’s actually his chauffeur’s child who’s been kidnapped. This original screenplay brilliantly explores social inequalities and moral dilemmas.

A prestigious and unexpected cast with A$AP Rocky

Alongside Denzel Washington, Spike Lee has made the bold choice of casting up-and-coming rapper and actor A$AP Rocky (Rakim Mayers), established actor Jeffrey Wright, and up-and-coming rapper Ice Spice, who could well be walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025.

This eclectic selection of actors reflects the director’s ambition to offer an innovative and committed reinterpretation of the Japanese classic.

Spike Lee, true to his commitments

Known for his committed films such as BlacKkKlansman and Do the Right Thing, Spike Lee seizes this opportunity to explore once again the themes of social justice and economic tensions, transposed to contemporary America.
