Prada plans to buy Versace
The Prada group is currently exploring the possibility of acquiring Versace, currently owned by Capri Holdings. According to sources close to the matter, the Milanese fashion house has commissioned financial advisors to assess the viability of such an operation, although no formal offer has yet been submitted.
A repatriation opportunity for Versace
Should this takeover be successful, Versace would return to Italian ownership after being acquired by Capri Holdings in 2018. This move would be part of a consolidation trend in the luxury goods market, dominated by French giants LVMH and Kering, who have stepped up their acquisitions in Italy in recent years.
LVMH already owns Fendi, Loro Piana and recently invested in Moncler and Stone Island, while Kering controls Gucci, Bottega Veneta and has an option on Valentino. Faced with these behemoths, Prada is seeking to strengthen its brand portfolio and secure its position in a changing market.
Prada: an aggressive strategy despite the slowdown in the luxury goods sector
At a time when the luxury goods sector is experiencing a slowdown, Prada is holding its own thanks to the growing success of its Miu Miu brand, which is very popular with young consumers. The Hong Kong-listed company is enjoying solid growth, which could enable it to absorb a major player like Versace.
Meanwhile, Capri Holdings is going through a phase of uncertainty following the failure of its merger with Tapestry, which would have created an American-style luxury giant. The group has mandated Barclays to explore various strategic options, including the sale of some of its brands.
A case to keep an eye on
According to The Platform, Prada has secured an exclusive agreement to carry out an in-depth investigation of Versace. If this acquisition goes ahead, it would redefine the balance of luxury goods in Italy, consolidating Prada as a key player in the face of French groups. To be continued.
