BAFTA: a look back at a ceremony marked by “The Brutalist”.

The 78ᵉ edition of the BAFTAs was held in London on February 16, 2025, honoring the year’s outstanding films. “Conclave” by Edward Berger and “The Brutalist” by Brady Corbet stood out with four awards each.
“Conclave” and “The Brutalist” top the charts
With twelve nominations, Conclave, a gritty drama about the election of a new pope, was one of the evening’s favorites. It won Best Film, confirming the popularity of Edward Berger’s feature film. However, Ralph Fiennes, up for Best Actor for his role in Conclave, lost out to Adrien Brody, who won for his portrayal of László Tóth in The Brutalist.
On the screenplay side, Jacques Audiard‘s French film Emilia Pérez, adapted from the novel Écoute by Boris Razon, also made its mark at the ceremony. While Karla Sofía Gascón, initially tipped for an award, saw her candidacy overshadowed by the revelation of controversial statements, Zoe Saldaña picked up the award for Best Supporting Actress, a first for her at BAFTA.
“Anora” and “Wicked” also win awards
The Palme d’Or 2024, Sean Baker‘s Anora, was hailed for its exceptional casting, with a special mention for Mikey Madison, crowned Best Actress. In her speech, she dedicated her prize to sex workers, a strong and noted commitment.
Last but not least, Jon M. Chu ‘s Wicked shone in the technical field, winning awards for best set and costume design, thanks to the work of Paul Tazewell.
