Beauty: the comeback of the 60s

Voluminous hairstyles, graphic eyeliner and oversized lashes: the beauty of the 60s is back with a vengeance in today’s trends.

A wind of nostalgia is blowing through the world of fashion and beauty, bringing back the carefree glamour of the 60s. From catwalks to red carpets, this retro aesthetic is establishing itself as a veritable phenomenon. The Golden Globes opened the season with looks inspired by this iconic decade, while the Spring-Summer 2025 shows confirmed this growing influence.

Sixties inspiration takes hold on red carpets and catwalks

The return of 60s style is more than just a fashion statement. It embodies an era marked by iconic figures such as Brigitte Bardot, Twiggy, Diana Ross and Sharon Tate. On red carpets, celebrities vie with each other to recreate this glamorous, sophisticated aura.

On the catwalk, several fashion houses placed the sixties at the heart of their aesthetic. Maison N°21 featured trademark Twiggy lashes, while Paul Costelloe played on hair volume by combining it with wide headbands, a key accessory of the era. For her part, Bora Aksu revived the mythical choucroutes hairstyles, also known as beehives, for a resolutely retro effect.

Sabrina Carpenter: the new Sixties style icon

If we had to choose a celebrity who embodies this trend to perfection, Sabrina Carpenter would be at the top of our list. Her style is immediately reminiscent of the great figures of the ’60s, thanks in particular to her openwork fringe with inverted tips, reminiscent of Brigitte Bardot. This wispy hairstyle, both elegant and natural, has become her signature.

Other celebrities have also adopted this aesthetic with brio. Kim Kardashian closed 2024 with bangs that were somewhere between Pamela Anderson and Brigitte Bardot, a look that she asserted on Instagram. Elle Fanning, meanwhile, opted for voluminous bangs, combined with pronounced eyeliner, for a resolutely yéyé touch.

Retro hairstyles: when volume is king

It’s impossible to talk about Sixties hairstyles without mentioning the impressive volume that characterizes them. The beehive, popularized by Brigitte Bardot, or the falsely negligee rounded bangs are must-haves of this era.

The stars’ hairstylist, Chris Appleton, confirms this trend:
“In the 1960s, hair was worn with volume and glamour. And in 2025, this timeless, sexy style will be inescapable.”

This is already evident in celebrity looks. Kim Kardashian and Elle Fanning aren’t the only ones to have succumbed to this trend. Lana Del Rey, a big fan of the sixties, regularly sports hairstyles inspired by the era, with crimped hair and sophisticated accessories.

Theatrical make-up

Make-up in the 60s was based on a single rule: daring and accentuating the eyes. Black eyeliner was the hallmark of the era. It was applied in a graphic way, often using cut crease, a technique that accentuates the depth of the eyes by drawing a black line along the crease of the eyelid.

This dramatic approach to make-up was popularized by Twiggy, who didn’t hesitate to multiply layers of mascara, creating an effect of ultra-defined, almost outlined lashes. Today, this aesthetic is taken up by artists such as Lana Del Rey, whose thick, plunging eyeliner recalls the icons of the sixties.

Nude lips and pastel shades complete this retro make-up look, contrasting with intense, graphic eyes. Forget overly pronounced contouring: the ’60s advocate a luminous, natural complexion, with touches of peach blush to soften the look.
