“Moss & Freud”: an intimate biopic about Kate Moss and Lucian Freud

The biopic “Moss & Freud” promises to be a fascinating dive into the relationship between iconic model Kate Moss and renowned painter Lucian Freud. The film, two years in the making, traces the nine months Freud spent painting Moss in the early 2000s, a pivotal period for both protagonists.

A unique artistic collaboration between Kate Moss and Freud

In 2002, Kate Moss, already at the peak of her career, expressed her desire to be painted by Lucian Freud in Dazed and Confused magazine. Despite his aversion to celebrity portraits, the painter, then aged 80, accepted. Months of sessions followed in his London studio, where a special relationship developed between the artist and his muse.

This collaboration gave rise to the painting Naked 2002, an intimate portrait sold at Christie’s in 2005 for 5.8 million euros. Another legacy from this period is more discreet but just as significant: Freud tattooed two swallows on Kate Moss’s lower back, a gesture evoking his naval past and their unique connection.

Meticulous production

Directed by James Lucas, who won an Oscar for The Phone Call in 2015, the film benefits from the direct involvement of Kate Moss, who oversaw the project. “It’s a personal story,” she confides, emphasizing the importance of her role in the biopic’s creation. The cast also promises to captivate: Ellie Bamber will play Kate Moss, while Derek Jacobi will lend his features to Lucian Freud.

A long-awaited work

Exploring this artistic and intimate parenthesis, Moss & Freud promises a nuanced portrait of two iconic figures. This biopic, produced by GFC Films, doesn’t just tell a story, but offers a reflection on art, intimacy and the weight of cultural icons. A cinematic event not to be missed.
