Stella McCartney regains her independence

British designer Stella McCartney buys back LVMH’s shares in her brand, ending a five-year partnership with the luxury giant.

A return to independence

After selling 49% of her brand to the LVMH group in 2019, Stella McCartney has chosen to regain her autonomy. This decision, made official in a joint press release between the two parties, marks a new era for the designer, who wishes to write her story in complete independence.

“This new chapter for Stella McCartney reflects her desire to write a new page in her history independently after working closely with the group to strengthen the fundamentals and governance of her house,” say the two companies.

Stella McCartney, an ongoing commitment to sustainable fashion

Founded in 2001, the brand has always been a symbol of ethical and sustainable fashion. A graduate of London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, the designer initially partnered with Gucci Group (now Kering) before buying out its shares in 2018, a few months before joining LVMH.

Its association with the French giant had enabled it to strengthen its governance and growth, while continuing to promote eco-responsible, leather-free fashion.

An ongoing collaboration

Although Stella McCartney is taking over full management of her company, she remains linked to LVMH. She will continue to advise Bernard Arnault and the group’s management committee on environmental and sustainable development issues. She will also take on the role ofinternational ambassador on these issues.
