The legendary Sex and the City staircase will soon be inaccessible
A place of pilgrimage for fans of the cult series Sex and the City, the stoop of Carrie Bradshaw’s New York apartment will soon be protected by a steel and iron gate, following complaints from residents.
For over 20 years, Sex and the City fans have flocked to Greenwich Village, home of the mythical staircase climbed many times by Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw. This staircase has become a symbol of the series, but also a source of nuisance for the building’s residents.
Barbara Lorber, owner of the residence since 1978, petitioned the New York Landmarks Preservation Committee to build a fence. This was approved on January 14, 2024, after years of unsuccessful attempts to limit intrusions, despite deterrent signs and chains.
The Sex The City phenomenon is hard to contain
According to Barbara Lorber, fans gather day and night in front of the building, taking photos, making videos for social networks, or simply having fun. These crowds are the result of the international success of Sex and the City, a series first broadcast in 1998, followed by films, a prequel and a sequel.
