Jude Law to play Vladimir Putin in “The Kremlin Magician”.
British actor Jude Law will play Vladimir Putin in the political thriller The Kremlin Magus, directed by Olivier Assayas and based on the novel by Giuliano da Empoli.
A complex role for Jude Law
Confirmed in an interview with Deadline, Jude Law will play the Russian president at the start of his political career. The actor, known for his demanding interpretations, expressed both enthusiasm and apprehension about the role: “It feels like an Everest to climb.” He added that he enjoys the challenges that push him away from himself, both physically and emotionally.
A prestigious international cast
In addition to Jude Law, the film will star Paul Dano, Alicia Vikander, Zach Galifianakis and Tom Sturridge. The screenplay, co-written by Assayas and Emmanuel Carrère, is based on the 2022 novel of the same name, which was a finalist for the Prix Goncourt. The plot is set in Russia in the 1990s, exploring the beginnings of post-Soviet chaos and Putin’s political rise.
A thriller with historical stakes
Against this tumultuous backdrop, the main character, Vadim Baranov (played by Paul Dano), goes from being an artist to a political advisor to a promising former KGB member, Vladimir Putin. The film promises a captivating plunge behind the scenes of Russian power, with a fine analysis of political mechanisms.
