La Cage aux Folles: a new life at the Théâtre du Châtelet

The famous musical “La Cage aux Folles” returns to Paris in a French version directed by Olivier Py.

From December 5, 2025 to January 10, 2026, the Théâtre du Châtelet will host a new production of Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein’s masterpiece. Adapted from Jean Poiret‘s original play, this version highlights the themes of diversity, tolerance and unconditional love.

An emblematic work

Created on Broadway in 1983, La Cage aux Folles made history with its celebration of LGBTQI+ rights and its universal message of acceptance. The play triumphed on both sides of the Atlantic, winning numerous Tony Awards and Drama Desk Awards, and remains a cultural landmark. Olivier Py’s staging, faithful to the spirit of cabaret, offers a renewed reading of this humane story, in which the question of homoparentality finds a contemporary resonance.

A show brought to life by Olivier Py

Laurent Lafitte‘s Zaza is a flamboyant character, a mix of rhinestones and heartfelt emotion. On stage, Zaza sings, dances and shines, but in the city, she plays a loving parent, ready to do anything for her child. Olivier Py reinstates this story in an era when minority rights remain a global issue, while paying homage to the cabaret universe so dear to the original play.

More than forty years after its premiere, La Cage aux Folles remains deeply political and terribly topical. This production will undoubtedly win you over with its commitment, modernity and festive energy.
