Franco-Belgian designer Matthieu Blazy will take over the creative reins at Chanel in spring 2025. He will succeed Virginie Viard. This announcement puts an end to several months of speculation surrounding this key position in the fashion industry.

A prestigious appointment

Matthieu Blazy, 40, is renowned for his bold vision and talent. A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de La Cambre, he got his start at Raf Simons before working for prestigious houses such as Maison Martin Margiela and Celine. Since 2020, he had been head of design at Bottega Veneta, where he was appointed artistic director in November 2021. Under his leadership, the Italian brand has succeeded in combining discreet luxury and emotion, while maintaining its growth in a complex economic context.

A fourth chapter for Chanel

Matthieu Blazy becomes Chanel’s fourth Artistic Director, following in the footsteps of Gabrielle Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard. He thus inherits an iconic house, founded in 1910 and embodying French elegance. According to Alain Wertheimer, Global Executive Chairman of Chanel, and Leena Nair, Global CEO, this appointment will “reinforce the brand’s energy and its position as a luxury leader”.

A promising vision

In a press release, Matthieu Blazy said he was “delighted and honored” to join Chanel. He looks forward to working with the teams to write a new chapter in the history of the house. This is a major challenge, as he will have to combine Chanel’s heritage with contemporary creativity and appeal to a demanding clientele.
