Sofia Coppola at the helm of the MAD ball
On July 6, 2025, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris (MAD) will inaugurate a brand-new event: an annual ball, orchestrated by Sofia Coppola.
The ball, which promises to be grandiose, is part of a celebration of French culture, blending art, fashion and design. The evening will also mark the centenary of the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, a landmark event in the history of Art Deco.
A French ball at MAD
The MAD’s nave and Hall Lefuel, which can accommodate up to 900 guests, will be the setting for the evening. These spaces, located in the heart of the museum, will reinforce the elegance and glamour of the event. Sofia Coppola, known for her aesthetic sense and refined universe, has been chosen to direct the artistic side of the event. ” This city, which I consider my second home, touches me deeply”, confided the director of Marie-Antoinette.
For the president of the gala’s honorary committee, Jean-Victor Meyers, the choice was a natural one: “Sofia Coppola knows how to create global universes, at the crossroads of fashion, art and design.” This vision perfectly matches the objective of the ball, which promises to be an immersive and unique experience.
Celebrating the legacy of Art Deco
This first ball will also be an opportunity to pay tribute to the Art Deco style, crowned at the 1925 International Exhibition. This historic event, held in Paris, not only left its mark on art history, but also contributed to France’s cultural influence. With its emblematic pavilions, including that of Le Corbusier, this exhibition laid the foundations of modernism and influenced the fine arts for decades to come.
The MAD, located on rue de Rivoli, shares this rich heritage as guardian of the treasures of this era. The ball will therefore be a natural extension of the museum’s mission to promote French art de vivre and artistic heritage.
A plunge into the Roaring Twenties
At the same time, MAD is organizing the exhibition La mode en modèles, exploring the creativity of the Roaring Twenties, from 1917 to 1939. This retrospective highlights emblematic figures such as Jeanne Lanvin, Elsa Schiaparelli and Madeleine Vionnet, through photographs, drawings and haute couture dresses. Scheduled to run from November 6, 2024 to January 8, 2025, this exhibition is an ideal introduction to the ball.
The MAD Ball is not just a social event, but an annual celebration where elegance meets tradition. With Sofia Coppola at the helm, this evening could well become a highlight of the Parisian cultural calendar. Who knows, perhaps it will eventually dethrone the MET Gala? At least we hope so.
