Director Robert Eggers unveils his remake of “Nosferatu” with a stellar cast, blending gothic horror and homage to the 1922 classic. Scheduled for release in December 2024, the film stars Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgård in a dark, haunting atmosphere.

A tribute to F.W. Murnau’s original

Released in 1922, F.W. Murnau ‘s Nosferatu remains an icon of horror cinema, inspired by Rembrandt’ s play of light and Caravaggio‘s contrasts. An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker‘s Dracula, the film features a terrifying vampire, played by the disturbing Max Schreck. This masterpiece of German Expressionism uses shadows and silences to generate a sense of dread, leaving a lasting impression with its atmosphere. Murnau, nicknamed the “Wagner of cinema”, met a tragic end, and his grave was even desecrated in Germany years after his death, reinforcing the film’s sinister aura.

Bill Skarsgård as Nosferatu

Bill Skarsgård, known for his memorable portrayal of Pennywise in Ça, takes on the role of the vampire. Bill Skarsgård is already familiar with Gothic horror and the supernatural, having played a vampire in Hemlock Grove. In Nosferatu, he plays a sinister creature stalking a young woman in 19th-century Germany. ” He has that commanding presence, perfect for making the character even more terrifying,” emphasizes Robert Eggers.

Lily-Rose Depp: the perfect gothic heroine

Lily-Rose Depp also joins the cast, bringing a touch of gothic freshness to the central female character. After her role in The Idol, where she explored the dark world of music, she plunges here into an even more disquieting style. The first image unveiled by Empire shows Lily-Rose Depp in a gloomy atmosphere.

In addition to Skarsgård and Depp, the film brings together Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, Willem Dafoe and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, creating a talented ensemble to carry this vision forward.

Robert Eggers is best known for such films as The Witch and The Lighthouse, and Eggers excels in dark, eerie atmospheres. He says: “It’s an angst film, a gothic horror film. It’s been a long time since the genre offered such intensity.”

The film will be released on December 25, 2024.
