After Grave and Titane, Julia Ducournau is preparing a new feature film, Alpha. Scheduled for release in 2025, the film tells the story of an 11-year-old girl in a fictional city reminiscent of New York, in the midst of the AIDS epidemic. The director describes this work as “her most personal and profound.”

For this film, Julia Ducournau has chosen a strong cast with Golshifteh Farahani and Tahar Rahim. Farahani, a Franco-Iranian actress, is renowned for her work with renowned directors Jim Jarmusch and Ridley Scott. She will play one of the lead roles. Alongside her, Tahar Rahim, star of Un Prophète, Le Serpent and Monsieur Aznavour (in cinemas), brings an added focus to the project.

Alpha tackles themes such as illness and parenthood through the prism of the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. Focusing on these subjects, Julia Ducournau continues to develop her special, provocative and often controversial style. Her last film, Titane, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, divided audiences and critics alike, some praising its audacity, others criticizing it for being too provocative.

Through Alpha, Julia Ducournau seems to be seeking a form of introspection, revealing an intimate vision of the times and its social upheavals.
