The Game of Thrones universe, which has captivated audiences for eight seasons, could soon extend to the silver screen. After the controversial end of the series in 2019, which left some fans disappointed, Warner Bros. is exploring new options for reviving this universe.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has given the go-ahead for the development of a film based on the Game of Thrones universe. The project remains in a preliminary phase, without a director, screenwriter or cast, but is already raising expectations.

Original creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had originally planned to conclude the series with three films. Such a trilogy would have brought the saga to an epic conclusion, but HBO preferred to complete the story on television. Now, as the franchise’s popularity continues to grow, Warner Bros. may be able to bring these unprecedented projects to the big screen. This perspective offers the possibility of exploring new plots or future developments of the iconic characters.

Back to Westeros

At the same time, the Westeros universe continues to expand through several prequel series. House of the Dragon, which retraces the history of the Targaryens, has captivated viewers and is currently completing its second season. Other series are also in the pipeline, such as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on the new Tales of Dunk & Egg, which explores events long before the main Game of Thrones plot.

Another project involves Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, who was open to the idea of reprising his role. However, this series is on hold for the time being. Harington recently stated that this project could be revived in the future, but remains “firmly tucked away in the closet” for the time being.

Towards expansion into cinema

While HBO focuses on prequel series, the movies offer an opportunity to tell post-Game of Thrones stories, with a format that could be more epic and in tune with fan expectations. Warner Bros.’ decision to get involved in these projects could mark a turning point, allowing the exploration of parallel narratives or sequels to the series. Sequels could delve into the future of characters such as Arya Stark, who sets off to explore new lands, or Sansa Stark, who now rules the North.
