Play it like Sophie Marceau in L’Étudiante and immerse yourself in medieval Jewish philosophical heritage. Take notes on a philosophical subject in this series of courses led by David Lemler!

The Institut Universitaire Elie Wiesel, in collaboration with the Alliance Israélite Universelle (AIU), offers a series of courses on medieval Jewish thinkers. From November 5 to 26, 2024, David Lemler invites you to explore the transformation of Judaism under the influence of philosophy. These lectures will take place online.

Discovering medieval Jewish philosophy

During these four sessions, David Lemler will discuss how influential Jewish thinkers living in the medieval Muslim world helped Jewish tradition evolve. Through these structured philosophical courses, he will show how some of these authors redefined Judaism as a religion based on monotheism and an intellectual ideal. Lemler will also analyze their efforts to integrate new ideas into traditional texts and turn them into concepts rooted in Jewish culture. In this way, the course cycle will provide an understanding of how this approach shaped Judaism as it is perceived today.
