Galerie Dior celebrates the art of Peter Lindbergh
Until May 4, 2025, Galerie Dior pays tribute to Peter Lindbergh, master of fashion photography, with a unique exhibition. The artistic legacy of this immense German photographer is revealed through the prism of his collaboration with the famous French fashion house. And it’s magnificent.
The exhibition, in the heart of Avenue Montaigne, features almost a hundred photographs. Taken between 1988 and 2018, they testify to Peter Lindbergh’s unique ability to capture feminine beauty without artifice. The originator of the Supermodel era in the 90s, Lindbergh is celebrated for his iconic portraits. He photographed Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista. In this retrospective, Dior also honors their collaboration, marked by photographs of emblematic pieces of the house, in black and white, in the raw, sincere style that defines Lindbergh.
A collab linked to the Peter Lindbergh Foundation
In partnership with the Peter Lindbergh Foundation, this exhibition focuses on Dior creations, captured by the photographer’s eye in all their glory. Peter Lindbergh, considered a devotee of film and black & white, has always emphasized a natural vision of women, without make-up or excessive retouching. His minimalist approach pays homage to femininity in its most authentic form, a quality that this autumn exhibition highlights.
During his career, Lindbergh produced several major photographic works, including one in collaboration with Dior, a collection of striking photos taken for prestigious fashion magazines. This book bears witness to Lindbergh’s close and privileged relationship with the French fashion house, a bond that is now revived in this exhibition.
70 years of Dior history in black and white
In 2018, Peter Lindbergh and Dior launched a groundbreaking project: photographing seventy years of Dior history on the streets of New York. In black and white, with striking shots taken on Wall Street, he immortalized the iconic pieces. “Wake up! Go out into today’s crazy world and let’s see what happens,” Lindbergh told his models at the time.
Highlights include Karen Elson’s strangled silhouette in a gray Oblique suit from Christian Dior’s Autumn-Winter 1950-1951 collection. Similarly, the diaphanous beauty of Sasha Pirovarova stands out in an haute couture piece by John Galliano, dating from 2000.
The exhibition book, published by Taschen, is available for sale, as a gift or for yourself!
The Power of the Lindbergh/Dior Duo
Finally, Peter Lindbergh’s contribution to the art of fashion culminates in his shots of Alek Wek, wearing a Bar suit from Christian Dior’s very first collection in 1947, and then a dress from Maria Grazia Chiuri’s autumn-winter 2018 collection.
