Léon Marchand: the new Olympic swimming record-holder
On Sunday July 28, Léon Marchand won gold in the 400 m 4-swim at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. It was the first Olympic title of his young career.
Léon Marchand has nothing left to prove… The international press would even consider him a prodigy. On July 28, he became Olympic champion for the first time. He won the 400 m 4-swim, his favorite race, with an impressive margin over the competition and an Olympic record (4’02″95). Alone in the world, the 22-year-old from Toulouse conquered his grail. Deeply concentrated, he took advantage of his first final in the pool at La Défense Arena to launch his quest for gold.
Two-time world champion and world record-holder Léon Marchand flew through the race with flying colors! He took almost 6 seconds off second-placed Tomoyuki Matsushita of Japan, in silver ahead of American Carson Foster. With a spectacular lead from the first turn, he discouraged his rivals before extending his lead in the backstroke and breaststroke. Despite an attempt to improve on his own world record, he touched 4’02”95. This marks his second-best time ever and a new Olympic record!
With an impressive list of 5 world records, Léon Marchand is a rising star in swimming. His world record for the 400 m 4-swim in the large pool, set in Fukuoka in July 2023, and his 4 world records in the small pool in the USA, are testament to his exceptional talent. He continues to push back the limits and make swimming history!
