Loewe presents its collection of upcycled handbags

Is recycling becoming fashionable? Loewe has just unveiled a new collection of handbags made entirely from scraps of leather fabric.

In 2021, the Spanish fashion house headed by designer Jonathan Anderson launched The Surplus Project, a novel concept based onupcycling. The aim was to create a series of handbags using only pieces of leather from old collections. This much more responsible and ecological approach aims to recycle textile waste and give new life to the brand’s first creations.

This year, Loewe renews the experience with its emblematic Flamenco bag, renamed Flamenco Surplus for the occasion. The brand’s craftsmen used strips of nappa leather and suede from offcuts, superimposed and cut into wavy layers. This undoubtedly limited edition is available online and in selected Loewe boutiques. It is also available in 4 colors at a price of €2,200.

Upcycling: a new trend?

In a world where new generations are increasingly favoring second-hand andupcycling, many luxury houses are embracing this trend in different ways. For example, Jacquemus wrapped its flowers in fabric scraps at a pop-up in March 2021, in collaboration with Les Fleurs de Paul. Louis Vuitton also followed this trend with its LV Trainers Upcycling sneakers. More recently, Glenn Martens, artistic director of Diesel and Y/Project, has teamed up with the Lee brand to create pants from denim fabric scraps. Similarly, last May, Patou launched an innovative initiative to recycle its raw materials in collaboration with Kitesy Martin.
