Christie’s announces auction of largest private collection of Louis Vuitton trunks
From June 19 to July 3, 2024, Christie’s, the world’s leading art and luxury retailer, presents a groundbreaking online sale of iconic trunks by the House of Louis Vuitton.
After auctioning off a large part of designer Vivienne Westwood’s personal wardrobe in London… Christie’s has decided to think even bigger this time! The auction house has announced the auction of the largest private collection of Louis Vuitton trunks in an online sale entitled “Legendary Trunks: A European Private Collection”. Assembled by a passionate collector, this collection of more than 100 models from one era or style constitutes a veritable anthology of Louis Vuitton trunks. Each more emblematic than the last! This sale is estimated at between €1.4m and €2.1m.
A Christie’s auction steeped in know-how
How about a little history? For nearly two centuries, every trunk has been an invitation to travel. A unique travel companion, this object evokes adventure, discovery and distant correspondence. In the history of trunks, one Maison has rapidly risen to the status of myth. By adopting a flat shape to allow luggage to be stacked, and by favoring lightweight, waterproof linings… Louis Vuitton gave life to the first luxury trunks.
From its foundation in 1854 to contemporary creations, including those by Virgil Abloh, these trunks bear witness to the exceptional know-how of over 5 generations of craftsmen. Among the most remarkable pieces in the sale is a Malle Armoire from 1900 with a copper exterior.
This rare and exquisite material was used to offer protection against heat, humidity and water during journeys to distant destinations. Also available is the famous Malle Idéale, in cowhide with brass locks. It features compartments for shoes, hats and scarves.
Unique Louis Vuitton pieces at Christie’s sale
The auction collection also features collaborations and special editions. Inspired by the concept of the Malle Idéale, Louis Vuitton created library trunks for books. The Malle Bibliothèque Hemingway, designed in 1927 by Gaston-Louis Vuitton for Ernest Hemingway, is the most iconic example of a travel library.
More special orders also include a Malle Courrier. It comes from the collection of French banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn. He devoted much of his life and fortune to traveling the world to document and promote cultural diversity.
